TRANSFUSION MEDICINE
Overview
Blood Transfusion Services (BTS) are a vital part of any modern healthcare organization without which provision of efficient medical care is impossible. The department is involved in blood collection, testing, processing, storage and issue of blood/blood components. We are utilizing state of the art technology and following stringent quality control protocols to ensure blood and patient safety. Voluntary whole blood and platelet donors are welcome to donate blood.

To prevent TRALI (transfusion related acute lung injury), we are using only male plasma for transfusions. Female plasma is sent for plasma fractionation.

Immunohematology laboratory

Fully automated analyzers available (Ortho VISION MAX® & VISION SWIFT®) for routine tests: Blood Group, Newborn Blood Group, Coombs test (direct & indirect), Cross-match, Antibody Screening by 3 cells and Rh Kell phenotyping

Advanced Tests: Antibody Identification, Extended Phenotyping and Antibody Titration.

Apheresis section

Universal PAS (platelet additive solution) added SDP (Single Donor Platelet) is available.

Therapeutic plasmapheresis, therapeutic red cell exchange, therapeutic leukapheresis and therapeutic thrombocytapheresis

Extracorporeal Photopheresis to treat Graft vs Host disease and Cutaneous T Cell Lymphoma

Irradiation of Blood Components (prevent TA-GvHD)

Universal irradiation of RDP and SDP

Irradiated PRBC and granulocytes are also available

Thalassemia Day Care Ward in collaboration with Rotary Club of Pune Sarasbaug and looking after 40 thalassemic patients.

Departmental time table:
The department functions 24 hours a day for 365 days. Hon. Consultants are available from Monday to Saturday at 9 am to 5.30 pm.
Departmental workload:
In 2023, department conducted 154 blood donation camps, 13899 whole blood collections, 554 plateletpheresis, 293 therapeutic apheresis procedures and issued 37670 blood components.
Academics Courses and training:
D.N.B Immunohematology and Blood Transfusion (broad specialty): 3 year comprehensive course in Transfusion Medicine.

The departmental coordinator manages daily operations, ensures compliance with regulations (FDA/CDSCO) and oversees staff and resource management (blood component inventory) along with liaison with other departments to ensure patient safety and efficient blood transfusion services.
