The Jamnabai Firodia Department of Critical Care Medicine is a premier facility dedicated to delivering high-quality, evidence-based critical care. It operates within a spacious 60,000 square foot area, providing a total of 114 beds (currently 108 operational). This department is equipped with cutting-edge technology and is capable of administering the latest critical care services, including:
- Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) - A lifesaving technique that provides cardiac and respiratory support.
- Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT): A dialysis modality suitable for critically ill patients with kidney failure.
- Advanced Hemodynamic Monitoring: Utilizing cardiac output-based methods to closely monitor patients’ cardiovascular status.
- Advanced extracorporeal therapies such as plasma photopharesis and various hemadsorption techniques
The team comprises highly qualified consultants providing around-the-clock care, supported by fellows and registrars. The nursing staff is exceptionally trained, with many holding certifications in Basic Life Support (BLS), Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), and Advanced Critical Care Nursing (ACCN). The department places significant emphasis on the continuous education and training of both nursing and paramedical staff, particularly in respiratory therapy.

Department Timetable :
The department operates 24 hours a day, seven days a week, ensuring that patients receive continuous monitoring and care. The academic timetable includes structured training sessions, with a focus on hands-on learning, regular lectures, and case discussions. Specific academic programs are conducted throughout the week to maintain high educational standards.
Department Workload :
The department manages a diverse patient population, handling a variety of complex medical and surgical cases. Turnover in ICU is very fast with approximately 9,500 admissions each year. The critical care patients from multiple specialties but not limited to:

Courses and Training :
The department offers several prestigious training programs, including:
- Super Specialty Program in Critical Care Medicine (DrNB): A three-year comprehensive course conducted under the National Board of Examination, Delhi. Admission is based on a competitive entrance test.
- Indian Fellowship in Critical Care Medicine (IFCCM) and Indian Diploma in Critical Care Medicine (IDCCM): These courses are managed under the Indian Society of Critical Care Medicine (ISCCM), open to candidates from diverse medical backgrounds, including Internal Medicine, Anesthesiology, Emergency Medicine and Respiratory Medicine.
Trainees participate in structured rotations through various General specialty and Super specialty ICUs, gaining hands-on experience in different critical care scenarios. The program includes weekly didactic lectures, bedside case presentations, and journal club discussions. Additional simulation-based training courses, such as the ACE simulation course and ECMO simulation course, further enhance the practical skills of the participants.
