Dr. Shantanu Deshpande, M.S.(Ortho), M.R.C.S.(Ed)(UK), F.C.P.S., D. Orth, has received MBBS training from renowned Grant Medical College and J.J. Hospital, Mumbai. His Orthopaedic training is done at prestigious Seth G. S. Medical College and K.E.M. Hospital. Mumbai (2002) which is one of the best institutes in India.
During his Orthopaedic training he wrote a research paper on Neonatal Septic Arthritis which was published in Journal of Orthopaedic Surgery in 2004. (Indexed Singapore publication) After that he went to England to receive further super speciality training in Joint Replacements. During his Five year stay, he was associated with privileged institutes like Doncaster & Bassetlaw University A. Hospital, Weston General Hospital (Bristol University) and The county Hospital, Hereford (Birmingham University). His last overseas appointment was at West Suffolk Hospital. (Cambridge University, 2008). He did research in UK on revision Hip Replacements and this resulted in publication of research paper in prestigious Journal of Bone & Joint Surgery (Br) 2010. The emphasis in his training has always been thorough knowledge, sound decision making, learning the surgical skills to perfection and their application in patients while maintaining the sympathy, empathy and respect.
Since his return to India, he has been following the speciality practice of Joint Replacements. He is also interested in Arthroscopic Ligament reconstruction around Knee Joint. He follows the principals of surgical intervention at a right time for right patient. Ethical practice and tailor made decisions as per the patients requirement helps the patient in long run. The improvement in the quality of life of the patients makes them happy.
While maintaining clinical and surgical practice he devotes lot of my time to Active Research. He is associated with natural nutritional supplements and their role in altering the onset and progression of Osteoarthritis. He is looking ways to prevent or at least delay the progression of this disease. This research has resulted in five publications so far with podium presentations at The European league against Rheumatism Congress 2014, Paris and World Congress on Osteoporosis, Osteoarthritis and Musculoskeletal Diseases Conference, Seville 2014” Seville, Spain.
He is also working on making surgical instruments to help the surgeon intra-operative decisions. He has developed an Angle Measurement Device and it has been submitted to Indian Patent office in 2015. (Ref: PAT/117/001/15.) He is very much involved in Disaster Management and was part of the core team at Bhuj Earthquake (Jan 2001), Orissa cyclone relief duty. (Sept 1999.) He organizes regular Free Health camps at Bavdhan and involved in Charity work for needy patients.
He loves to travel and be with nature. He enjoys lawn Tennis and adventure sports like Trekking, Cycling and snow Skiing. He did successfully complete the Everest Base Camp in April 2009 and Kedarkantha Summit in Dec 2013.
