Dr. Hemant Wakankar M.S, DNB (Ortho), F.R.C.S., MCh (Ortho), F.R.C.S (Ortho), pursued his medical education at the famed Seth G. S. Medical College and KEM Hospital in Mumbai in 1986 and completed his Orthopaedic post -graduate training (M.S. Orthopaedics) from the same institution in 1989. Subsequently, he was an Orthopaedic Lecturer at BYL Nair Hospital and TN Medical College in Mumbai, inspiring students with his tutelage and working with DR. D. D. Tanna and Dr. C. A. Talwalkar till October 1992.
He went to UK for further training in October 1992. He initially worked in Cardiff and later joined South-East Thames Orthopaedic Specialist Registrar Training Programme at St. Thomas’ Hospital and Guy’s Hospital, London. He completed FRCS in General Surgery from Royal College of Surgeons at Glasgow, UK in 1995. He obtained M.Ch. Orthopaedics degree from University of Liverpool, UK in 1996, and also bagged two awards including Gold Medal for the clinical part of the examination, specializing in the area of artificial joint Implantation. He then completed FRCS Orthopaedics in 1997. Learning overseas, he performed brilliantly and obtained several degrees that are globally acknowledged.
During his 7 year stint in UK, Dr. Wakankar received extensive training in all aspects of Joint Replacement Surgery. He trained with senior surgeons like Dr. David Nunn, Dr. John D’Arcy, Dr. Mike Fordyce and many others. He then did Joint Revision Surgery Fellowship for one year based at Tunbridge Wells with Dr. Charles Gallannaugh and Dr. Kenneth Tuson. He spent his last year in UK as Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon at University Hospital Lewisham, at Lewisham in London, after which he returned home in 1999 and is now successfully practising in Pune.
After returning to India, Dr Wakankar started his exclusive super speciality practice in Joint Replacement Surgery in Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Pune. He performed Pune’s first bilateral Knee Replacement surgery in 2000.
Dr. Wakankar is the first medical professional in town to have made use of the space suit and laminar airflow operation theatre for artificial joint implantation in the Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital. He has applied Computer Assisted
’Navigation’ TKR technique, and he is credited with performing Pune’s first computer guided ‘Navigation’ surgery in December 2004.
Dr Wakankar currently performs joint replacement surgeries at: Deenanath Mangeshkar Hospital, Ruby Hall Clinic in Pune. Dr. Wakankar has conducted many training programmes in joint replacement surgery and has delivered numerous lectures world over. He has performed over 10000 joint replacement surgeries successfully.
Awards, Medals & Scholarship:
Khazenifar medal awarded for best performance in the clinical part of M.Ch. Orth examination conducted by University of Liverpool, UK in November 1996. Awarded prize for Anatomy and Surgical approaches in the M.Ch. Orth examination conducted by University of Liverpool, UK in November 1996. National Merit Scholarship awarded by the Government of Maharashtra in June l979.
